I am a first year K-2 SPED teacher in a Title I school, and I have completely deconstructed my classroom to allow for flexible seating. I currently have a round table with 5 stools and a horseshoe table with 3 chairs. With kindergarteners and students of any age/size who have ADHD, regular chairs and stools are not always a safe option for them to sit in. They like to lean back in them or wiggle around, and that’s so dangerous. They often fall over and that’s a safety hazard for them and all of their peers. Flexible seating will keep them safe while still letting them wiggle! I want my students to not only be safe and relaxed while they’re learning, but I want them to have options! Having the privilege of choice when it comes to seating can make or break a classroom, especially one with a non-traditional design. I am confident that my students will be more excited about being in class and moving through center activities if they get to have seating options that are more inviting and are safer than regular chairs. I also want to make sure I have enough seating options to account for my full class, while at the moment I do not have enough chairs or other seating options to seat an entire class. I will have between 10 and 20 students in my class and I currently only have 8 seats. This project, if funded, will help create spaces for each and every student to be accounted for in their learning!
