Every day in my classroom starts with at least ten minutes of free reading, and students love it! This time is a chance for students to select books at an appropriate reading level that truly interest them. With students begging for more time to read books that excite them, it is clear that a well-stocked classroom library will provide my students with opportunities to explore new stories. Free reading increases student comprehension, helps students build vocabulary and background knowledge, and encourages a positive attitude toward reading. We are requesting books for a classroom library of diverse, multicultural, contemporary stories that will excite them as readers! Creating a rich, diverse, and multicultural classroom library empowers students to apply skills to free-reading books that they have picked out of interest so that they take ownership of their learning. Whole class texts are not enough to inspire passionate reading. Kids that read often and read independently for pleasure are the best readers, so it is crucial to create a classroom environment that promotes this engagement by having a variety of books at their fingertips. Since a "one-size-fits all" approach does not work to engage readers, I hope to give them what they want and need-voice and choice!
