My students are English Language Learners. Their first language is Spanish. Many have arrived to the United States as recently as three months ago. My school is working to meet the needs of our population in an ambitious manner - we are converting to a dual-language Spanish/English school. Each cohort of students will have a Spanish teacher and an English teacher. This transformation takes time and currently the dual-language program only reaches to third grade. The fourth grade, my class, receives English only instruction with Spanish support as necessary. My students are bright, engaged learners who are eager to not only learn English but also to learn all the content that we cover in fourth grade. We've had an exciting year studying energy, animals, famous people and the fifty states. My students are excited for their upcoming unit on ancient civilizations.
