From whom do students learn the most? (Psst: it's not from the teacher!) Students actually do the majority of their learning from each other. Students need to express and share their ideas with each other in order to develop deep and lasting conceptual understanding. The biggest lever in students owning their learning is this process of collaborating with each other to co-create the knowledge that will help them reach their education and life goals. To foster this process of student-to-student learning, and for my scholars to co-create meaningful knowledge, they need technology to display ideas to each other. Access to a document camera can make this happen. This technology allows students to represent their thinking in multiple ways on their own papers, then display their thinking so the class can collaborate, connect and build upon the learning with their own ideas. Every student voice is heard, and all voices contribute to the collective knowledge in our classroom. This year especially, this technology will be vital. We are combining with another school, doubling our student body, and thus requiring more resources. And given the likelihood of Covid-related restrictions, each class will have to stay in a classroom with each teacher traveling between classes to teach. I will need to have a portable way of showing student work. This technology will help me create a portable classroom to foster the fruitful discussions and collaborations that will bring a deeper and more personal learning to these scholars.
