Social studies is a new content area in our school, and one that is crucial in a world where we are always being given information, regardless of accuracy. One of the most important things that I want my students to learn is empathy, and how important it is to consider new perspectives, even if they differ from their own. Historical fiction offers the opportunity for students to develop a new understanding by becoming a part of the story. Through texts, such as "Chains", students can connect with the characters and situations in a way that meets them on their level. This project will help provide a backdrop to the beginnings of our country, as well as our study and discussion of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, while providing an opportunity for literacy development. Funding this project will be the first steps in creating a learning environment that helps students seek to understand one another, and their community.
