First graders benefit from seeing excellent mentor examples when they begin the writing process. For this upcoming school year, I would like to enhance my students writing lessons by teaching mentor sentences by connecting reading and writing by reading mentor texts to highlight specific writing strategies. My hope is that my students will begin to understand and utilize the skills that I highlight in the mentor texts when they go off to write their own stories during writer's workshop. In order to do this, I will need strong mentor texts (trade books) to lead my lessons each week. Each week I will focus my instruction on a writing strategy by highlighting that skill that can be found in a specific trade book. This process will allow my students to see that writing skill in action by a published author before they go off to try it on their own. In order to be a good writer, one has to see good writing. These trade books will help my first graders visualize and understand new writing strategies, while enjoying a plethora of new, highly engaging and fun literature.
