Many of my students who are English Language Learners or who struggle with a learning disability will benefit greatly from color-coded notes and assignments. These students need auditory, physical, and visual cues often to help them understand which notes correlate with which tasks. This type of color-coding also helps them with executive functioning skills so they can focus more on the skills they are trying to acquire or strengthen rather than organization that comes naturally to most of us. A color printer will be of great benefit to them in the classroom because it will allow these students to feel they are able to tackle difficult reading and writing tasks more independently as well. Struggling learners are often timid in asking for help, but this will allow them to build their independence and identify areas of needs more readily. Imagine when a student can say, "I'm having trouble with the red sentence" rather than handing the teacher the paper and saying "I don't understand this." A simple tool like color-coding can make a huge difference in how teachers and students communicate about their learning.
