Teaching students the letter/sound correlation and then building up to how to decode any word they encounter in their reading means teaching phonics in an explicit, systematic way. Our school understands that students need to have a firm foundation in decoding words in order to begin to truly comprehend what they are reading. We would like to use Jan Richardson's Word Study method in our classrooms grades kindergarten to second so that by the time students get to third grade they have strong decoding skills to tackle more complex text.
