My 8th graders read the dystopian novel "The Giver" for first quarter. It is used to introduce them to close reading and how to identify key details related to plot, character, and conflict. Graphic novels will allow those that do not speak English as a first language, and those that struggle with reading and comprehension, to better comprehend the novel and complete work that allows them to progress in their learning so they do not fall behind. 40 copies will allow me a full class set for inclusion English and additional copies for students in other classes.
