I am requesting a front-facing bookshelf for my kindergarten classroom. Right now I have a three-tier metal bookshelf that is just a mess. The books have to stand up, spine facing out. Since most of the books on their reading level are thin and flat the books just fall over. My students can only see the spines of the books, which have tiny print. Since they are emerging readers it is hard for them to know what book they are getting. With a front-facing bookshelf, my students will be able to see all the books and their amazing cover art! I know if I saw a book with an amazing cover it would catch my eye. I want them to see the amazing books I have and to encourage that love for reading. I also believe that students will continue to choose books based on characters they know. For example, If they were able to read a Pete the Cat book then they may choose another Pete the Cat book to explore. If would be easier for them to see the Pete the Cat book based on the cover as opposed to digging through a book bin. With book bins, they would have to pull each book out until they find the one they are looking for. Thank you for considering my future amazing kiddos!
