Neil Gaiman, in his Introduction of the updated publication of Fahrenheit 451 probed, " They [stories] are the way we transmit our stories and our thoughts from one generation to the next. If we lose them, we lose much of what makes us human. And fiction gives us empathy; it puts us inside the minds of other people, gives us the gift of seeing the world through their eyes. Fiction is a lie that tells us true things, over and over". I read this novel thought to my brilliant class of 5th graders. What ensued was a deep discussion of works of fiction, how fiction relates to real life, what parts of our most favorite read-alouds and independent novels provoked thoughts- wonderment. Moving forward, providing the gift of escape through literature is a welcome model for many children. The mind of a child is naturally curious and searching. What a better way to provide this than placing many books in many hands.
