Printed materials allow for more student engagement. Students can get burned out from relying solely on computer based educational programs. Distance learning has forced us all on the computer for the majority of tasks. The experience to manipulate books and use pencils to write are valuable in a learning environment. 'Summer slide' is when students do not retain information over the summer. With a summer bridge book, they will practice skills they have learned in 4th grade to better prepare them to enter 5th grade; therefore avoiding the 'summer slide'.
