My students mostly come from homes at or below the poverty level. Families focused on providing heat and food often can't spend money on a wide variety of books. This puts them at a disadvantage by the time they reach kindergarten. One of my fundamental goals is to use fun picture books to spark an interest in reading. Education is changing every single day, and so are the interest of my students. A wide range of books helps improve vocabulary and teach them about the larger world. Students in my program do not have a school media center they can access. There is a local bookmobile but it only comes monthly and has limited options.
