My students will be able to use their own individual instruments to learn, rather than understanding musical concepts through body percussion or singing. Unfortunately my school is very low on instrumental supplies and some of the students have to share or wait patently during instruction time. I want my students to be able to perform during classroom instruction time with the professional tools that allow them to grow to their best musical self. For example, I had a First Grade class this past year where we often played drums, and other types of handheld percussion. There were many instances this past year where I did not have enough instruments in the classroom to be able to have all the students performing on an instrument at the same time, usually one of the students had to either follow the music, sing along, or use body percussion. All students deserve the opportunity to participate fully during instructional time. It is also important to note - having a surplus of instruments in the class will also help with differentiated instruction for many of my autism classes, as those students often respond well to a more broad array of different sounds/textures. To be able to have more resources in my classroom would open up so many more opportunities for my students, performance-wise and through general musical comprehension. My students deserve good quality resources in order to be as successful as possible in my instrumental classroom.
