Kindergartners love to move! Most importantly, research has shown that our young learners learn best through movement. I experienced this first hand during the 2019-2020 school year with my kindergartners, and it has reshaped my entire teaching style. With this in mind, I am hoping to provide my students with a fun place to play on during their daily hour of play, as well materials to explore and learn about the world around them. These materials will be utilized for different literacy, math and science lessons as well throughout the year. For example, the sensory bin will be used for students to practice 1:1 letter and sound correspondence. This will be done by putting different items in the sensory bin for the students to find. Once they find the item, they will use kid tweezers (fine motor development practice) to place the item on our alphabet trays on top of the correct correlating letter. This is just one of the many uses of the sensory table. The balls and scooters fit perfectly with our science standards about forces (push and pull). Students will get to learn these scientific principles through hands on application using these toys. Also, the scooters will be utilized for sight word races. These races will entail students racing each other to put a bean bag on the correct word the students are given orally by the teacher ( ie "the"). The basketball hoop will be utilized to meet the Common Core State Standard CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.6. Sports are a marvelous way for students to practice communicating their wants and needs with peers. Social-emotional learning is a huge part of Kindergarten, and play helps students learn how to communicate better than anything! The learning options are truly endless for each of the above equipment!
