During my time as a preservice teacher, I was lucky enough to student teach in Ennis, Ireland in a primary school. I was so fortunate to learn from the educators there and practice their philosophies of early childhood education. One of the keystones in the pedagogy of many Irish primary schools is a program called Aistear. Aistear means "journey" or "adventures" in Irish, and the Aistear program allowed students to take many journeys right inside their classroom. Each month, a new dramatic play center was introduced and became a key component of the classroom curriculum. I am hoping to implement the same emphasis on dramatic play in my own classroom, to create engaging and meaningful learning across all subjects and standards. This focus on dramatic play encompasses all aspects of student and human development. Students are able to be risk takers and try new things, practice social skills, and gain exposure to experiences they may not have access to otherwise. In my experience teaching in Title I schools, I've noticed my students may be lacking vocabulary skills, social skills, and general background knowledge that can help support reading and writing growth. I hope by creating a framework through dramatic play to structure my writing, reading, social studies, and science curriculum, I will not only help my students become more engaged in their learning, but also expose them to new interests, hobbies and passions they may have not otherwise known they had. I would be so grateful if you could help support me in making my classroom a safe and fun place to learn, create and grow.
