Katherine Patterson wrote “It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations—something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own.” In order to reach all 100-120 of our 3rd graders, our team utilizes carefully chosen mentor texts to teach skills and introduce students to a wide variety of genres, authors and topics. These books will be shared and utilized, by the classroom teachers, to dig into a variety of necessary skills and standards students are required know in 3rd grade. But that is just the beginning! Not only do these books showcase rigorous reading and vocabulary skills, they provide a playground for student’s imagination. They also provide unique opportunities to discuss and practice social scenarios, foster emotional growth and provide students a chance to see cultures and ways of life that are different from their own.
