Suddenly all schools were closed and we were faced with the stark realization that technology in education is no longer an option. It is no longer something we incorporate sparingly to make our lessons more fun. We need to explicitly teach our students how to use and access their education online independently. Our students need to have universal access to a variety of devices that allow for increased engagement through the ability to access their education digitally. The teachers in the RISE Academy have always been acknowledged for being ahead of the pack in terms of incorporating technology and internet-based learning tools into their curriculum. However, even given this exposure we have seen our students struggle with their ability to access their virtual learning platforms independently. Therefore, we are asking for additional Chromebooks and headphones to move us closer to greater academic engagement by having 1:1 access for students. Our goal is to increase total student engagement through funding for additional technology in all of our classes with a particular emphasis on working with students who have historically struggled with truancy, and utilizing online learning to reengage these resistant learners.
