I teach in a school where students and their parents face many challenges. Many of the parents work hard, but have little time or resources to enrich their child's learning. Half of the student population does not speak English at home, and face challenges of living in a new country. There is a high mobility rate of students due to the economic challenges facing families. Despite all of this, my first grade students still love learning about the world around them. I would love to add Scholastic News to the classroom as a way to provide enrichment activities for the students. Scholastic News is engaging and relevant to the students. It contains thoughtful text that teaches reading skills as well as content area information. It is accompanied by interesting videos and exciting games for the students. Best of all, the students have text to take home to read once we are finished with it in the classroom. So many of my students do not have access to a library or are able to buy books to read at home.
