Mathematics requires students to exercise judgement, think creatively, and call upon grit and determination to solve problems. When content becomes complex or abstract, however, students naturally look to their teachers for guidance and feedback. This is where the Lumens DC170 Ladibug Portable Document Camera and 2 standard sets of EAI Education Algebra Tiles will be most helpful. My students are learning from home using personal devices and district-provided managed ChromeBooks; we leverage best features synchronous and asynchronous online work, but also struggle with some of the limitations. While digital whiteboards and drawing tools are powerful and helpful aids in annotating or performing some operations online, students benefit tremendously from seeing mathematics done by hand. I have found the online whiteboards to be awkward, especially in the execution of lengthy problems in Calculus or algebra which require lots of space. Additionally, teaching geometric constructions with a compass and straightedge is best done with a document camera so students can see the proper use of the tools and techniques. That said, this document camera I am requesting will help me to demonstrate problem solving strategies to students working remotely in a way that closely mirrors the way they will be doing the work themselves. I will be able to place the tiles under the document camera and offer demonstrations to help students understand binomial multiplication, quadratic factoring, and completing the square. Further, it will be possible to differentiate instruction by recording the work done on the document camera and uploading for students to use as they need it. Finally, the need for this document camera and tiles will not evaporate when the distance learning period ends, because the portable camera and tiles can be used in my classroom as a valuable resource for me and my students.
