Research says that by the time a student reaches second grade they have decided if they like to read or not. But, in my classroom, I teach them that everyone loves to read. The key is to find the right book. Within my first week of school we read 50 books as a class. The idea is: the more they read, the more likely they are to find a book they like. Research has also shown that the best way to get a student more proficient at reading, is to read. So we only have three rules about books in my classroom: 1) always treat them with respect 2) always say yes to sharing, and 3) always have one with you. “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates' loot on Treasure Island and best of all, you can enjoy these riches every day of your life”- Walt Disney. Now, the problem is that as a first year teacher I do not have as many books as I would like to share with my class. By half-way through this year, my students had read almost every book in my library. This is why these selections of Scholastic book collections would greatly help supplement my classroom. My students would have direct access to all of these books throughout the year. These books would help in Daily 5 when students work on reading skills independently, with their teacher, and as a pair. These would also provide students with new stories to use as mentor texts when working on improving their writing. These collections of books were all chosen specifically to help expose students to award winning books, classics stories and novels As well as gain knowledge in Science and Art and Social Emotional Skills. Thank you for your support!
