As a new teacher, I am building a strong classroom library to give students a rich text environment that exposes them to the diversity of life and a love of learning new things. My goal for this project is to provide students with read aloud stories that carry powerful lessons for them to learn about themselves. They will identify emotions and feelings, learn self-regulation techniques, and find ways they can live healthier by being a scientist of their own body. Fostering a classroom that promotes self-awareness develops students resilience to adversity. According to the U.S. Department of of Health and Human Services, supporting children in self-regulation predicts "better performance in school, better relationships with others, and fewer behavioral difficulties." The selected read aloud books will focus on developing skills in self-regulation for serving their emotional needs and skill awareness of positive social behaviors to support their evolving social skills to reinforce life-long resiliency. The new books I seek to bring to my classroom allow students to not only learn about self-regulation, but in developing pro-social skills through learning cooperation and inclusiveness. Some of the story subjects focus on learning about social inequality and inequity such as in "Separate is Never Equal" by Duncan Tonatiuh. Sharing these stories and experiences will educate my students, and myself, so together we can build a community that celebrates our similarities and differences. These read aloud stories will turn into inspiring teaching moments that will happen as soon as we get back into the classroom in August. The world of print in these children's stories nurture the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of today's children during these unprecedented times.
