Every day in my classroom students have the opportunity to check out books from our classroom library. I set aside some time in our weekly schedule for them to practice reading a book of their choice during Silent Sustained Reading. They also have the opportunity to share their thoughts as well as apply the reading skills they have learned by completing a one-pager task for what they have read. An added perk to these one-pagers is that they present them briefly to the class. It is my hope that other students’ interest is piqued, and they will be eager to check out their next book! My DonorsChoose project also includes Junior Scholastic. I want the students to look forward to each edition like we all look forward to our favorite magazines every month. The Junior Scholastic articles will provide us the opportunity to explore shorter texts and reinforce our newest language arts skills together.
