For the past two years, my kindergartners have sat on two small carpets that I duct-taped together in the hopes to create a meeting space for us. We meet two times a day for class meetings to build relationships at the carpet and we also spend lots of time at the carpet for whole group learning. As you can imagine, the two smaller carpets do not hold up well to all this use. Not to mention they are far too small for all 20-22 students to fit, which I feel is counterproductive to our sense of community. My hope is that the requested carpet will help to cultivate the sense of community/family I wholeheartedly seek to create. By providing a welcoming and inviting environment for the students, my hope is that my students will feel safe and like they belong. Through this experience, I hope to help foster my students' love of school and learning.
