My students thrive on coming to the carpet and listening to me read aloud to them. Often, rich classroom discussion about empathy, tolerance, and overcoming challenges occurs during this time which leads to a strong classroom community. Providing students with opportunities to read books that they can connect with will deepen their love of reading. The picture books that I have carefully chosen include characters from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Whether it is through independently reading or by listening to me read aloud to the class, having books in our classroom that students can 'see' themselves in and relate to will foster their love of reading.
