Our shelves are bare! When I became a classroom teacher of Talented and Gifted, I was given a room which had never been a classroom. Consequently, there were few resources available and certainly no well-stocked library! I believe that students deserve to have access to rich literature. Literature affords students the opportunity to see life beyond their own zipcode. It scaffolds the development of language, imagination, and critical thinking. For my students to have access to a plethora of genres would be like seeing the Glory of a miracle! My students absolutely devour books. One of the central activities in my class is our Chapter Book Club (CBC). Because my TAG students are accelerated readers, 840-1040 Reading Inventory, it is not necessary to divide them into groups according to "reading levels". Instead, students select an area of interest and by proxy form reading groups. They then choose a chapter book aligned to our curriculum to support their area of interest which runs the gamut! The CBC runs parallel to guided reading. Students focus particularly on comprehension and when necessary I am able to work one on one or in a very small group to improve fluency. The only thing missing in this room of Utopia is a worthy library. Receiving these books would be so beneficial in supporting my students' love of reading. And, as Guthrie (2008) so succinctly wrote, "Access to books in the classroom results in increased motivation and reading achievement." Who doesn't want that? Thank you ~
