My classes will study the novel, The Running Dream, while also using it to practice our reading comprehension, writing skills, characterization, setting, plot development, and presentation skills. This novel will pull the students through the pages with passion and empathy. My students will learn about prosthetics and cerebral palsy without it ever seeming like a lesson. We will be reading and analyzing the novel as a class, promoting discussion, and bonding with one another. Students will write about the characters, plot elements, and make predictions about what is to come in the novel. We will also be doing group work on empathy and why it is so important within our society. This book encompasses not only academic standards but also social ones too. The students will come away from this book with a surprising ending and feeling very inspired.
