The list of materials my students need are truly the basic school supplies that people take for granted. When my county closed my school due to the corona pandemic and we transferred to online learning, my heart sank. My students count on me to supply them with the basic school supplies! All our supplies are locked up in my classroom and are not accessible. I’ve been working with my students online using the computers our school district distributed. I then asked them to use paper and pencils to work on their fractions. It turns out only 17 out of 54 had paper and pencils. I was just frantic! How do I get my children pencils and paper? Much less creative supplies like crayons, paper, glue and stickers. I also really wanted to assign a “create a robot from recycled materials” project but, I realized my students cannot do that with their lack of supplies. All supplies that are delivered through DonorsChoose, will be sent to a location in my school district that I will be able to access after the mandatory waiting period for the safety of everyone. I can then distribute the supplies on buses that bring food to my students Monday - Friday. My students are motivated, bright, kind kids that are struggling with parents being unemployed, lack of food at times, and no basic school supplies. I just want my kids to have the fair chance to learn that they deserve. Please help me level the playing field in education. It will help my students close the gap and be successful in their learning.
