As Dr. Seuss said, "Reading can take you to places you have never been before." There is no other skill that is more important to learn than reading. Students must not only know how to read but they must have a fondness for reading. One way that I can cultivate a love of reading in my students is to create a book club in my classroom. Book clubs allow students to interact with one another in an enjoyable way around texts. By funding our project, you will not only increase students’ Lexile levels, but also make them better writers, and you will ultimately increase their overall academic performance. However, in order to create a book club, you need books, and not just any books. The books I have chosen will engage my students and allow them to see themselves within the text. My goal is to create passionate readers through independent reading.
