In the intermediate grades, students are starting to read music and learn how to work together as an ensemble. Ukuleles provide that music reading and group dynamic, but can also be a solo instrument for students to practice. Many of my students do not have access to instruments outside the music classroom and have never experienced playing an instrument such as this. Students would learn how to properly care for their instrument, tune the instrument, read chord tablature as well as standard music notation, be able to play alone and in groups. Teaching Ukuleles would be a way for kids to feel empowered in their learning. As they practice and learn an instrument they will become better at it allowing them to build self-esteem in themselves and their abilities.
