By giving my students the opportunity to connect literacy with cooking, they will experience so many benefits. First, they will get to listen to a variety of fun stories from picture books. This will help them develop a sense of how stories are structured and show them the how fun reading is! Secondly, they will get to discuss the stories and the snacks we cook with their peers to develop their language and acquisition of English. Learning new words from the stories, the ingredients we will be cooking with, as well as the kitchen tools we will be learning how to use will greatly add to their developing vocabularies. Third, they will learn the important life skill of following directions, both orally and in writing. Fourth, my little chefs will learn how to make healthy snacks on their own, thus developing healthy eating habits. Last, the children will be drawing a picture of the snack they made and writing about it! This project address all areas of developing literacy skills so important for our little learners.
