When we get to come back to school we will need to be really flexible and intentional about how we are responding to students and what our students will need from us. This time away from school is going to mean different things to different students, however, what we know is that stress is really high right now in most of our homes and especially so in low income communities. We have been learning a lot about brain research and the impact that trauma has on our students developing minds. Kids can't learn if they are dysregulated. Even if we are the best teachers, with the best laid out lesson plan. If students are dysregulated, it doesn't matter! I want to provide a Calming Corner for every classroom with tools that can help students regulate. When students can have space and time with tools to keep their hands busy they are able to calm more quickly and get back to learning ready.
