Math manipulatives are hands-on tools that help engage students in making connections. They can be essential in helping students to deepen their understanding of mathematics concepts and procedures, as well as have physical tools for problem solving. Manipulatives help make abstract ideas concrete and can ultimately the tool that a child needs to better understand a concept. The manipulatives in this project are focused to help engage my math students, hands-on, throughout the entire school year. I have selected these materials as they align to state standards for sixth grade. Fraction strips will be used for each student to have an up-close and physical tool to locate whole numbers greater and smaller than 0. Fraction and Decimal Multiplication cards are a fantastic way to visually represent the daunting concept of multiplying fractions and decimals. A set of polygons for the class will help them grasp the concept of area, surface area, and volume as they can lay the objects out flat, fill them up, and measure them. Centimeter cubes will also be a great addition to this concept. Whiteboard clipboards and dry erase markers will be utilized by allowing students to work on a problem independently, then share their strategies with their classmates. With your help, my math classroom will be full of hands-on, master mathematicians in the upcoming year!
