The goal of this project is to get our students more engaged in hands-on science labs both outside and inside the school for all Biology, ESL Newcomers, ESL Life Science, Field Ecology, & Zoology classes, beyond the theory and into the practical of what science looks like in every day life. Research has shown that hands-on science labs result in the highest levels of student engagement and academic performance. We have an incredible asset in the river by our school but we need some equipment (seines, aquatic D nets, & aeration buckets) so that we can do more aquatic specimen collecting and identification with our students. We would also like to do more insect collecting/ID on the edges of the river using the insect nets. During the winter and spring seasons, we desire to bring the outside into the classroom by teaching students how to grow and maintain plants from seed to fruiting stage. Many of our urban students have never done this. Seedling heat mats, grow light stands and grow lights will help us to accomplish year-round experiments with our students that incorporate ALL NGSS life science standards. This past year we performed a trial run with two classes where they grew vegetables and herbs throughout the year. The students loved it and the students in the other classes kept begging to do it. This project would allow all of our students to grow their own vegetables and herbs and bring them home to their families. These supplies will be used to implement hands-on labs that turn the theoretical concepts of Ecology, Cells, Genetics, & Evolution into tactile learning experiences that every student can see, feel, smell, and even taste!
