Students who are in English 11 (American Literature) their junior year of high school read classic titles in the American Lit canon, like The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye. In a course that is titled American Literature, I believe students should also be exposed to literature that is from modern America, in order to relate and connect back to their lives. By giving students the choice between some excellent American memoirs, they will be exposed to how we view American/Americans today, compared to what they have read that was published in the 1900s and before. This memoir unit will bring the American Literature course full circle, and give students the opportunity to dive deep into discussions through small "lit circles" or "book clubs".
