Using books and social stories help kids understand difficult topics and find connections with characters in them. Stories can open up students' minds and help them explore what they are thinking and feeling. Reading stories together is an excellent way to build attachment and rapport with students. It gives a voice to difficult topics and makes it easier to talk about. Stories have impact beyond the initial reading of the book and can improve mind-body connections, impulse control, social and emotional regulation skills. Pictures help kids connect to tangible things versus abstract concepts and will be great for more concrete thinkers!
