One of the science standards in Kindergarten is understanding life cycles and how things grow and change. We begin to introduce this in the fall with caterpillars and butterflies. Students make models of the life cycle to demonstrate understanding, as well as journal writing to document changes. Because children need multiple experiences to understand new concepts, hatching chicks in the classroom fits perfectly with this standard and provides another opportunity in the school year to deepen those connections and understandings. Students will keep a journal of the incubation process, candling experiences, pipping, hatching, and the changes that take place within the first couple weeks of a chick's life. Because their writing and articulation of thoughts has developed significantly since the beginning of the year, their journal writing will be more detailed and meaningful than they were at the beginning of the year with the caterpillars and butterflies. Along with teaching compassion for animals and the responsibility that goes into caring for the embryos and chicks, this will provide an exciting, engaging and authentic experience that students will remember for many years to come!
