This project will give my students a space in our traditional classroom for them to visualize what a true adult living space looks like. They will have the practical learning experience of keeping the space clean and organized, with access to a vacuum, dusting supplies, and organizational storage. Not only will they practice independent living skills through cleaning and organizing, but they will also then be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor by utilizing the space as a social area to play games and interact with one another. Space will give my students the hands-on learning that they need the most. They benefit most not from seeing or hearing about life skills, but by PRACTICING life skills. They will organize the games. They will learn how to play them. They will plug the vacuum in and be taught how to turn it on and operate it. They will sit with one another, talk to one another, read about current events and enjoy each other's company, all while being guided by myself and my staff. This space will give our room and area that branches away from the traditional desk and chair seating and helps to transition them to a setting they will inevitably encounter as they graduate high school and move on in their adult lives.
