My students need more non-fiction and less textbook experience with environmental science, research, and climate change. Reading this Pulitzer Prize-winning book helps us to rethink the fundamental question of what it means to be human. Students can collaborate and have rich discussions that are much more effective, meaningful, and lasting than using traditional textbook information. Students can apply what they have read to every-day life and guide their decision-making with more worldly knowledge of the earth's history and how we are changing its future. I want to challenge them to hold mature discussions as they would in a casual setting, to practice and refine their discourse skills.
