Biotechnology is a rapidly growing, incredibly engaging, and prominent field here in the Silicon Valley. To make it come alive in a classroom requires equipment. Thanks to the Amgen Biotech Experience, I am able to run real biotech labs in my classroom. The students love these labs and often comment on how it feels like they are "real scientists" when they are doing them. Even with that support, we are still short on the biotech equipment that students find so engaging. At my previous (and more affluent) school site we were able to purchase enough equipment to supplement the Amgen gear so that students could work in pairs. I need three more gel boxes to run my DNA fingerprinting lab, so that students can work in pairs.
