When students reach high school, their love for reading dwindles. To combat this, many teachers are trying to build small classroom libraries, and with good reason. When students have immediate access to high-interest texts and are given time to read, their love for reading is often rekindled. My students are given 10 minutes every day in class to read so that they can remember why they loved to read as children. However, to keep students reading, I need to have books at the ready that can be put in their hands when they finish a book, or - as some resistant readers continually do - abandon books, especially since our school library's book collection has been cut in half to create a "commons area." By creating a mini-library in my classroom, I can help students find their perfect match and cultivate life-long readers. Increasing access to books, however, is not my only goal. Once they are hooked on reading again, I want to ensure they have access to a variety of well-written, thought-provoking texts: books they can devour quickly as well as books that will challenge them; books that will mirror their own lives as well as books that will be windows into lives of others. Through this, I can expand their ability to think critically about the world around them, and their role within it.
