Technology is the newest and most popular instrument on the music scene today. More and more of the songs you hear on the radio use different technology programs to create original music. My students are so involved in technology, it seems only appropriate to introduce them to the world of music composition through one of the most used music programs, garage band for iOS. We explore this program on iPads and the 5th grade students have a large project devoted to creating their own original song on garage band, but I would like to expand it to other grades as well. The addition of these iPads in my music classroom would mean not only that more students would have access to the composing program, but that I could start the introduction to it earlier in my curriculum. We currently have iPads in the school, but we are only 3:1, so it can be a bit frustrating trying to schedule time with the iPads with other specialist teachers, classroom teachers, and especially with the testing schedule. Having 6 iPads that would be devoted to the music room might not sound like many, but it would help immensely when working in group projects, stations, or even when testing occurs and I can only get 22 iPads instead of 30. I know if I had a set of full-time iPads in my room, I could use them for all sorts of activities including interactive lessons, small group research, and games.
