Biology is always changing and advancing, and so is the technology. When learning about DNA, a PCR thermocycler will allow my students to explore real world genetic applications. A thermocycler allows my students to explore a technology used by actual genetic scientists, doctors, and forensic scientists. They can take small samples of DNA and make multiple copies. This can be used in genetic engineering, forensics, and even looking at their own DNA! In AP Biology, my students will be able to use this to amplify their own DNA and test it using gel electrophoresis. At my lower levels, they will learn about the nature of DNA, enzymes, and how DNA is utilized in forensics. We can even "solve a crime!"
