With everything that is happening in our nation and world right now surrounding diversity and social justice, I want to provide my students with high quality books that are inclusive and reflect diversity. I believe it is important that my classroom library represents all races, genders and gender identities, cultures, family structures, sexualities, and beliefs. As a 2nd year teacher (1st year in Kindergarten), I have struggled to provide the funds necessary to provide the quality and quantity of books I would like to provide my students access to. With these books, my students will be able to see themselves in literature, and learn about children and people from backgrounds that vary from their own. Reading is often a key into the world, and teaching students early on that they are valued and seen, and by having this at the core of my classroom I hope to model empathy, active listening, and anti-racism to my students, who are developmentally sponges. Thank you for your dedication to the future, and to our youth.
