Most students within the small community I teach in are middle class caucasian students. They do not have the benefits of living with diversity. Therefore, I hope to open their eyes to other people's perspectives to give them a glimpse of empathy through the eyes of characters faced with social injustices. These books address some of the most common areas of discrimination in our world today. Building awareness to other people's pain and injustice is a stepping stone to creating more understanding humans in this day in age. It is my hope that through reading diverse literature combined with powerful book club discussions, students will think before choosing judgemental and hateful behaviors.

About my class
