My seventh-graders love book clubs! They select books in groups of 3-5 and have weekly book club meetings in class where they learn to have academic, thoughtful discussions. As a 20-year teacher, I have found no better method to get more kids excited about reading than book clubs. My students' reading levels range from early English language learners to high school. But I feel that we're in a long-form reading crisis: kids (and now many adults) are used to quickly processing media bites from the internet. For many of my readers, book clubs help my timid readers overcome their fear of reading large books on their own.
