My school is embarking on a new endeavor and adapting restorative justice circles in order to build community within our building. In a typical restorative justice circle, students and teachers are seated in such a way that nothing “blocks” them from one another. Right now, students in my room are sitting at their desks. Due to their enthusiasm regarding the potential of these circles, and their expressed excitement about our school’s new social/emotional goals, I’d like to give them a more comfortable and welcoming environment. These seats will be used during our circle time to differentiate the classroom from typical learning and allow students/teachers to sit in an open circle where they feel welcomed and safe.
