As a first year teacher, I am always looking for opportunities to learn more about teaching and find new ways to improve my craft. Last year, at the conclusion of my student teaching, my clinical educator gifted me with a professional book that had a profound impact on her teaching. I spent the next few months reading. This book, The Wild Card, has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and create meaningful experiences for children. This year I have explored what experiences my enthusiastic, active, curious second graders need to stay focused and succeed. Alongside my co-teacher, we created a day long mystery integrating math, reading, writing and social studies. Throughout the day, the students collected clues after complementing each task. At the conclusion of the day, the clues came together to reveal the answer to the mystery. I was amazed at the engagement of students at all academic levels. Stepping outside the box created an educational experience they will never forget. This day encouraged me to be more adventurous within my classroom. That was when I found the Get Your Teach On Conference. The authors of this incredible book are hosting a 4-day professional development conference in June to provide teachers with new strategies for raising student engagement and making learning fun! Topics at previous conferences include Engaging Readers, STEM, Social Studies & Culture, Writers Workshop, Technology Integration, and so much more! My students will benefit from the new ideas I will bring back to my classroom.
