This seasoned curriculum teaches self-management, problem ownership, and healthy communication skills to students. It is a program that aligns with the American School Counseling Association standards that school counselors follow to facilitate social-emotional growth through their counseling methods. It not only includes whole classroom lessons but small group materials as well for working with students who may benefit from more individualized instruction. Schools have seen a 75% reduction in student conflict after implementation of the Kelso's Choice curriculum. Through the instruction of nine conflict management precepts, Kelso empowers students to be able to figure out first if an issue is a "kid sized problem or an adult sized problem", as we call them here at our school, and how to appropriately handle these situations. K-5 is a crucial time for social-emotional development in children and teaching these skills on how to healthily interact with others is of the utmost importance. This especially goes for today's age of increased screen time. Children need to be effectively instructed how to engage with their peers and be equipped with the strategies to work through their problems on their own and this project seeks to do that here at our school.
