Teaching in a self-contained class with students with special needs is both rewarding and challenging. It is challenging in a way that I always wanted to provide them an environment that will motivate them to focus on the things that they can do. I am not setting aside the things that they cannot do yet, but providing an environment and materials that will stimulate their enthusiasm to learn will definitely make a huge difference in achieving their maximum potential. A classroom environment that entices both warmth and learning is an ultimate wish that I wanted to give to my students with special needs so that they can focus both on maintaining their abilities and enhancing skills that they needed to work on. I am excited to see them use flexible seating that will help them focus, tables and chairs in each center that makes them feel they are working on certain skills with different materials and in a comfortable working area, calming corner area when they needed to regulate their emotions, different charts such as the behavior chart that will make their performance visible and motivate them to make more good choices. I will be grateful if you join me and help to make this wish for my students possible. They may have different special needs, but they need one same thing, which is a make over of the classroom with materials that will trigger interest to learn and not trigger frustration because of their challenges in learning concepts.
